In Phuket I was invited to the Mission Hills – a golf resort on the north-east coast of the island, with its own 18-hole course by the sea, pools and a quiet location away from Patong. From here I played the legendary Red Mountain Golf Club, laid out in a former open-cast tin mine: red rock faces, changes in elevation, holes you will not see anywhere else.
The caddies, all women, are incredibly professional, by the way: within ten minutes they had worked out how I play and were giving me the best tips. Anyone who plays golf in Thailand understands afterwards why the country is so popular with golfers.
I almost always book through Booking.com – for the free cancellation and the genuine reviews. Hotels.com is also worth checking to compare prices.
