Amalfi Coast

Lemon groves, colourful villages on the cliffs and turquoise sea – the Amalfi Coast is Italy in its purest form.

Why the Amalfi Coast?

The coast road between Sorrento and Salerno is one of the most beautiful stretches in Europe: Positano clings to the hillside in pastel colours, Amalfi has its cathedral and its paper mills, and Ravello sits high above with gardens that look out over the whole sea.

In high summer the coast is crowded and expensive. In May and September the water is warm, the road is clear and prices are a good deal lower – that is when I go.

Instead of driving (parking is scarce and expensive), I move between the towns by ferry. The coast looks best from the water anyway.

My tips for the Amalfi Coast

  • Ferry instead of car: the Sorrento–Positano–Amalfi lines run from April to October.
  • The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) from Bomerano to Nocelle is the finest hike – start early.
  • Capri is worth a day trip, ideally on the first boat in the morning.

Where to stay?

Positano is the postcard, but also the most expensive place. You stay cheaper and quieter in Praiano, Minori or Maiori – with ferry and bus everything is quick to reach.
