Golden temples, boats on the river and the best street food in the world – Bangkok is three days of big city before the beach.

Bangkok is the gateway to any trip through Thailand, and three days are enough: the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Pho with the reclining Buddha, and in the evening Wat Arun seen from the other side of the river. In between you take the express boat along the Chao Phraya – the cheapest and loveliest way to get around the city.
What I love about Bangkok is the food: a wok, a grill or a pot of soup on every corner, and everything costs about two francs. Chinatown in the evening, Chatuchak market at the weekend, the rooftop bars along Sathorn for the view over the city.
The heat is the only tiring thing – sightseeing in the morning, pool in the afternoon, back out in the evening. From Bangkok you're an hour's flight from Phuket or Koh Samui.
By the river (Riverside) for atmosphere and boats; Sukhumvit for the Skytrain and nightlife; Silom for business travellers. Hotels are very cheap by European standards.
I almost always compare hotels, apartments and guesthouses on Booking.com – with genuine reviews and usually free cancellation.
