Museums, street food, Aztec ruins and art on every wall – the megacity everyone underestimates.
Mexico City is huge, loud, colourful – and one of the most exciting cities I know. The Museo Nacional de Antropología alone is worth the trip, as is the Frida Kahlo house in Coyoacán, and the pyramids of Teotihuacán are an hour outside the city.
The Roma and Condesa neighbourhoods are green, relaxed and full of cafés and restaurants. That’s where I stay, and where you feel at home straight away.
The food is the best argument: tacos al pastor from a street stall, tamales for breakfast, mezcal in the evening – and all of it for little money.
Roma Norte and Condesa are the first choice: safe, green, walkable and with the best restaurants. The historic centre is magnificent by day, but better avoided at night.
I almost always compare hotels, apartments and guesthouses on Booking.com – with genuine reviews and usually free cancellation.
